WHY MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE?

Memorizing scripture gives us victory over Satan and sin, and it makes us see Jesus more clearly. Memorizing God’s promises will keep us from becoming emotionally crippled, and it will help us relay comfort and counsel to others. Finally, knowing scripture well will make us a more effective witness.

HOW TO MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE?

There is no wrong answer to this question. Basically, you should use the method that works best for you. Work is the operative word here. Just like anything else, your success is directly related to your effort. If you are a visual learner, notes taped to a place where you spend time is a suggestion. Or, scripture written on index cards are convenient for travel. A favorite of mine, especially when learning a lengthy passage, is to replace words with picture sketches. Auditory learners may benefit from recording scripture on an electronic device for playback. Remember that hiding God’s word in your heart has eternal benefits!

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Psalm 86:11

Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

Colossians 3:23-24

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as for the Lord rather than for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

1 Corinthians 15:58

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the will of God, that which is good, acceptable, and perfect.

Ephesians 4:32

Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
