OUR HISTORY
Canon United Methodist Church was established out of a need for a church in the area. Many families living in Canon were attending churches in the Royston circuit, and with the leading of pastor John F. Yarborough, the Canon church was founded. The first service was held in the Baptist church on the last Sunday in February of 1905. The congregation paid the Baptist church one dollar per month as rent. Later in the same year, land was purchased for $75, and the present sanctuary was completed in late summer of 1907. In October 1907, 35 charter members were received. In 1908, Canon UMC was added to the Royston circuit under the leadership of pastor W. W. Gaines.
Gaines Chapel United Methodist Church is an outgrowth of a Sunday School conducted at the Dawkins School. In 1909, W. W. Gaines, the church's namesake, planned and carried out a revival that eventually resulted in the organization of Gaines Chapel United Methodist Church. The first church structure was completed in 1913. In early 1941, the first building was torn down, and a new building was completed in the fall of the same year. The current building was renovated in 1962, and a fellowship hall was added in 1980.
Currently, both churches are very active in meeting the needs of the Canon community, as well as, the needs of people in other countries. Our family of believers considers it a joy and privileged to serve Christ through worship and service. Come as you are. We would love to have you in our family.
